The Rich History of Mining in Greenwood, British Columbia

In the rugged mountains of the Boundary Region in southeastern British Columbia, lies the picturesque gold rush town of Greenwood — Canada’s smallest incorporated city, with the biggest heart!

Ore was first found in the late 1880’s. Further prospects led to the building of a large smelter by the B.C. Copper Co. From 1901, copper, gold, and silver poured from its furnaces. Fed by the great Motherlode Mine, it employed 400 men. The collapse of inflated war-time copper prices forced closure of the smelter in 1918.

To this day, mining in Greenwood, British Columbia is ongoing, with companies exploring for gold, copper, and other metals.
